MICHIGAN WALLEYE FISHING EVENT BENEFITS MIS CARES AND RACING FOR WILDLIFE

Fish beware. NASCAR fans are angling for charity.

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman led a walleye fishing expedition on Lake Erie on Thursday, June 11, 2009, as part of the kick-off of the LifeLock 400 NASCAR Spring Cup Series event at Michigan International Speedway (MIS).  “Fishing is my favorite way to wind down and enjoy nature,” Newman said. “My grandfather used to take me fishing in this region of Michigan when I was a kid, so I have a lot of good memories around there.”

Funds raised during the fishing tournament will be distributed to local charities throughout southeast Michigan via MIS Cares, the speedway’s official charity arm under the umbrella of the NASCAR Foundation. A portion of the funds will specifically benefit the Waterloo Recreation Area for the cleanup of Cedar Lake Camp. This is part of the Racing For Wildlife initiative that includes partners The Conservation Fund, the Ryan Newman Foundation, Michigan International Speedway, Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Cedar Lake Outdoor Center is a Michigan Department of Natural Resources-designated park and has been designed for families and kids camps to enjoy.
